Learning Pathway Component
Ryther is committed to upholding our social justice values by both acknowledging the systemic racism and oppression the juvenile justice establishment while also believing strongly that youth involved in the system deserve high-quality care. We partner with King County to provide services to detained and non-detained youth involved in the court system. This placement provides a student intern the opportunity to work with justice system-involved youth across multiple settings.
We are currently accepting the following internship applications for this Learning Pathway:

Common Learning Activities:
Provide services to court- and detention-involved youth, both in the community and within the juvenile detention facility
Complete comprehensive MH and/or SUD biopsychosocial assessments and provide treatment recommendations
Co-facilitate therapeutic and psychoeducation groups
Provide individual therapy and crisis de-escalation support
Collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external partners including primary care team, parents and family members, case managers, detention officers, court system staff, and more
Learn from weekly individual and group supervision
Gain knowledge at weekly team meetings, including multi-disciplinary case consults (“grand rounds”)
Teach and role model basic mental health skills with staff at partnership sites
TRAININGS
Our rigorous onboarding process includes a variety of core trainings such as:
Motivational Interviewing
Behavior management and crisis de-escalation
Trauma-informed care
Record keeping and clinical writing
Workplace expectations
Ethical decision-making
Case management skills
Additionally, students in this Learning Pathway get specific training and supervision in:
Introductory training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Applying Trauma Informed Practices in therapeutic relationships
Trauma-Focused CBT training
Crisis de-escalation training
REQUIRED ELEMENTS
To fully participate in this Learning Pathway, interns should meet the following requirements:
Due to the nature of this role working with vulnerable youth in detention, candidate must be able to pass King County criminal background check.
Available to attend required team meetings every Wednesday 10am-12pm (in-person at Juvenile Court building in Seattle).
Available to attend at least one weekly pass-down meeting Mon-Fri 1:45-2:15pm. (virtual or in-person).
Available to work at least one evening per week (Monday-Friday) until 7PM. Saturday/Sunday house available, but not required.
May complete SUD assessments only with active SUDP/T credential from the Dept of Health.
Able to work in-person at our community partnership sites in King County. Some hybrid work is available.
Can maintain practicum placement for no less than 9 months (3 quarters). Preference for those who can commit to a full 12 months.
Able to complete assigned tasks outside of their specific Learning Pathway based on agency needs, school/program requirements, and individual learning goals.
Acceptance of and ability to work with individuals and families with a variety of identities, behaviors, and cultural and spiritual practices with the ability to apply a social justice and equity
